Simandou Iron Ore Mine, Guinea

state-owned enterprise

Share:

Project Background (Pain Points):

The mining area is located deep within the Simandou Mountains in southeastern Guinea, covered by pristine rainforest and characterized by isolated geography and extreme terrain. The region's elevation ranges from 800 to 1,656 meters, with an elevation difference of over 800 meters at its greatest. The steep mountain slopes present significant challenges for leveling open-pit mining sites. Furthermore, there are currently no access routes for large equipment, construction materials or personnel. Temporary access roads must first be constructed, which would significantly increase the construction timeline and costs.

Operating conditions and technical specifications:

The Simandou iron ore deposit is located in the Simandou Mountains of the Kailouane Province in southeastern Guinea. With proven reserves of 4.4 billion tons and an average total iron content exceeding 65%, the ore bodies are concentrated and shallowly buried, making them suitable for open-pit mining. Upon completion, the project will achieve a total production capacity of 120 million tons per year, positioning it as the world's fifth-largest iron ore supply source.

Given the characteristics of Simandou Iron Ore's location in a deep rainforest, on steep terrain and with a complex geology, we supplied the following products to meet the demands of open-pit mining on steep slopes and of constructing infrastructure in the rainforest. This ensured construction was both efficient and safe.

1. High-Performance Drilling Bits: High-strength rotary drilling bits and down-the-hole drilling bits for surface drilling rigs are crafted from wear-resistant, impact-resistant alloy materials. Specifically engineered for hard rock formations in mining areas (iron ore and surrounding rock), they effectively reduce bit wear, extend service life, and significantly decrease drill string replacement frequency in rainforest environments. The high-strength drill pipes paired with these bits offer superior resistance to bending and corrosion. They precisely match the stress requirements for drilling operations on steep slopes, fundamentally preventing issues such as drill pipe breakage and stuck bits during drilling.

2. Drilling tool auxiliary accessories: Equipped with pilots and shock absorbers to minimize deviation during drilling operations on steep slopes and in complex geological formations, thereby enhancing drilling accuracy. Paired with corrosion-resistant protective sleeves to shield critical components of the drilling tools, delaying rust and aging in humid rainforest environments. This ensures long-term stable operation of the drilling tools and reduces maintenance costs.
